La soeur de Salomé is inspired in part by the death of John the Baptist as recounted in the Gospels according to Mark and Matthew, but more particularly by an apocryphal legend whereby Salomé died traversing a frozen lake. The ice gave way, and she fell in the water up to her neck. Ice then formed around her neck, leaving her head exposed as though on a silver platter. FTA
